Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is done by surgically placing implants to enlarge your breast size. Your particular needs will determine the placement of the implant, either under the breast tissue (sub glandular) or under the pectorals muscle (sub pectoral)

Indications:
If you desire to have larger breasts, if you want to improve the position of the nipple or if you want to correct slight differences between the breasts.

Considerations:
What size do you want to be? The best way is to look at pictures and imagine yourself with the size. Share this with your surgeon.

Very small breast may not get optimal results with very large implants. In most patients, there may be a preference to place the implant under the muscle, however, some patients may benefit more from a placement above the muscle.

Breast augmentation may or may not improve any differences between the breasts. It is helpful to notice any difference in size, positioning of the nipples and the shoulders. All this will affect the outcome of your surgery

How is the surgery performed:
An incision is placed with either under the breast, around the nipple, in the armpit or in the belly button. The armpit approach uses special cameras and for many patients seems to be the preferred way. A pocket is made in the desired location and an empty implant is positioned. The implant is then filled with the appropriate amount of saline.

After Surgery:
All instructions are individualized for each patient according to their needs, please consult the instruction sheet.

Dressings are typically removed the next day.

Some patients will be instructed to use  a bra or a  wrap.

Massaging the breast after surgery is encouraged since this enhances the blood circulation to the breast and speeds up your recovery. Massaging also softens the breasts.

After 2-3 days most patients will experience a dramatic decrease in their discomfort. Oral pain medication will alleviate most of your pain.

Oral antibiotics are started one day before surgery and continued for 4 days afterwards.

If you have any sutures to be removed, this usually happens after 7 days.

Light activities can be resumed as tolerated.  Aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks.

Follow up visits – usually within the first three days.

Possible Risks and Complications:
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
